Hey ... Gordon Freeman ... remember me?

Well ... I'm back to Half-Life after a few weeks of moving.

When I left off last time I thought I was at the end of On a Rail, but apparently I have a little bit more to go. These first two screenshots are where I started.

coming down this large ladder, I got to a very difficult section. There were the laser mines that went across the door way and on the other side were three of the stationary guns that just kept owning me. Straight across was a room with two aliens but the gunshots were coming right through the glass and owning me as well. I was at 28 in health and no matter what I could do I was getting owned. Forgetting some basics I got really frustrated. That basic skill was "ducking" - it never crossed my mind and I just couldn't get my fingers going in the right direction to figure out the right combination to get my out of there.

So ... gaming confession ... I turned on God mode. A shacker let me in on how to do that and to me it was just like playing NES with the game genie. I just went right past. Today in hindsight I feel bad for doing it, but I tell you, it's nice to get past that section and see what comes up next.

Finally, the first time in a while that I've seen the "outside" - more soldiers, a big hole and a lot of action. I killed some of the soldiers with the shot gun, which I've learned is such a better shot that the machine gun, but also used alt-fire a few times. There was also my own stationary gun that I got to use, which was good, but my aim on that wasn't good. After moving up a little ways I encountered some made my way into a control room.

I saw a familiar site in the control room, a bright red button which I knew to push. Some windows closed and some rumbling happened and low and behold a rocket launched!! This would of been more dramatic for me had I not spent so long in this level and hadn't forgotten what the soldier had told me what back at the beginning of the level. But that's what happens I guess when you get stuck in a rut in a game.

After the control room I ended up in another room with soldiers and this bright yellow spinning globe. I thought by chance I had finished On a Rail, but apparently this is finally the end of the level. So now, not being able to figure out an exit from this room, I'm going to back track and see what I'm supposed to do.

The God mode issue, opens a can of worms I haven't faced in Half-Life yet. My previous gaming experiences have been on similar terms, playing the NES with the game genie, getting infinite lives and being invincible. Playing sports games like NCAA Football on Junior Varsity or Rookie level and not facing much challenge. I'll have to admit it was nice moving through and getting something accomplished, but it's a little sour considering I had to use a "cheat" to do it. As soon as I cross into the next level, "God" mode is going off and I'm finishing the game the right way. (Unless Xen is actually as bad as I've heard).

God mode... Oh, that hurts. I wanted to avoid giving spoilers, but...

Those turrets are activated by the red laser fields, or if they are attacked. If you manage to jump/crawl/otherwise manuver through the lasers, you don't have to fight the turrets.

One of my tactics, when I could get away with it, was to throw a grenade at the base of one turret, pulling out the shotty and unloading both barrels into the other. With proper timing, both would go down, with no harm done to me.

Those particular turrets- I can't remember exactly what tactic I used, but I think I threw 'nades down through the broken elevator shaft at them. The grenade launcher (alt-fire on the submachine gun), also takes care of them nicely. I see you have 6 of those in your second screenshot, but it looks like you use them very liberally- down to 2 at the lauch site. When and how are you using them? How much ammo do you have for each of your weapons?

Also, when you entered the building, did you avoid the lasers, or did you godmode through the explosion? That spot, that one room, is a test of semi-important skills, not in reactions or aim, but in thinking. You would be cheating yourself, and only yourself, to continue without defeating that challenge.

Tips:Weapons-

Crowbar: Use for opening crates, or as a -very- last resort

Pistol: Basically useless once the SMG becomes available. Works underwater.

Revolver: Will kill a marine or vortiguant slave with one headshot, or two torso shots. Ammo hard to come by. Use for an opening shot if you can take time to aim, or once you can aim quickly to get consistent headshots. Long range.

SMG: Medium range, moderate damage. Can be used in most engangements to good effect

SMG GL: Not to be used in close quarters. Area effect, useful for hitting targets indirectly, tight groups, or heavy targets. I have trouble finding enough of these.

Shotgun: Best in close quarters, poor at longer ranges.

Crossbow: (not found) most damage, works underwater, scoped. Best at extreme range against unaware opponents, but long reload time can be a problem.

Rocket launcher: (not found) Conserve for use against aircraft and tanks.

Energy weapons: (not found) Useful only against specific heavy targets, such as tanks, aircraft, and one bunker.

Grenades: Throw 'em, they blow up. Not for use at close range.

Satchel charges: Situationally useful as traps or to counter laser tripmines. CAN be used in a skirmish, but NOT recommended. Also can be used to destroy tanks. (Throw a couple of satchel charges UNDER the tank)

Laser Tripmines: (I don't think you've found them yet) Can be used to set traps, or cover a path where enemies might try to come behind you. VERY situationally useful.

Snarks: (not found) Worse than useless. More likely to attack you than the enemy, and do little damage.

You are coming up to the end of the chapter. Remember, the pistol works underwater, as does the crowbar.

You are practically a hop-skip away from the next chapter! You've already launched the rocket, and you just need to backtrack out of the rocket area where you'll see one of the large doors now open (or now able to open) that you passed when you got outside.

Dan gives pretty good advice on the use of the weapons, but I will say snarks do have their uses, mostly in using them from above (like if you're on a ledge above a bad guy). Otherwise, snarks can be dangerous to use.

As always, best of luck!

A tip for ladders, pressing jump [space] will launch you away from it horizontally, so you should be able to avoid tripping any laser traps like the one you started this session on.

Also, a sneaky grenade round 'suspicious' corners can do a lot of good.

Please turn godmode off, some of the best parts of the game are infuriating until you crack them, but that's the whole point.

In case you still haven't remembered, the rocket you launched contained a satellite that the scientists at the Lambda complex (your ultimate destination) needed in orbit in order to close down the remaining portals to Xen. Dear Lord, I need a girlfriend.
