stuck ... and frustrated
I was hoping I was about to find the end of On a Rail, but I've hit a spot that I can't get out of.
Here are the screenshots:

In the second shot, I'm in an area with a moving cart. I can't move forward because there is a gate that is down and no way to make it go up. From above some soldiers are owning me with ammo and grenades. In the first shot are boxes that I cannot jump over or destroy with grenades or stationary trip mines. On the other side of the boxes is a staircase that I think would somehow lead me up to where the soliders are and perhaps will give me some way to get past the downed gate.
Somebody experienced with Half-Life help me out here please!

You can duck-jump the boxes.
Good luck ;p
I forget whether you said you played the tutorial or not, but if you haven't, and/or you just forgot how to duck-jump, I would suggest going through the tutorial for that part, because christopher is right.
From the screenshots you've taken, I believe you're fairly close to the end of the chapter. It's been a while since I've played Half-Life, however, so I could be wrong.
Yeah, just duck-jump the boxes and the path will present itself. I'd do my best to conserve health and explosives -- you're coming up on a really mean final room soon.
One quick note on the Vortigaunts (electricity-shooting aliens), from your last post: they're easiest to engage around corners. They have a very deliberate "charge up" before they attack, so you can use that short time to run behind the corner and avoid the bolt. Strafing left/right (A and D, by default) is the key skill for corner dodging.
