Back to Basics for me ...
Sometimes what seems to be so complicated to me in this game ends up having the easiest solution that if I had just thought about it, instead of getting frustrated, I could have just moved right on through the obstacle. Of course crouch/jump was the way around the boxes in my previous post. After re-learning how to do that I moved right on past the boxes, up the stairs, killed some soldiers, got some more ammo, upgraded my armor, and moved a lever which raised the bar on the tracks below.

I'm in a bit of a quandary again, I've come upon a large room and another one of those stationary guns with a soldier behind a barricade. My health is only at "3" so it's going to take some tremendous "skill" to get past here with such low health.
(I hope this is that final room that one of the last blog responders mentioned, because I really want out of this level).
Things like crouch/jump and straffing were certainly things I learned in the training room at the beginning of the game, but are not things that I've mastered moving through the game. It was hard enough trying to learn WASD but that seems like second nature now. I guess I just need to force myself to use them and they will become second nature as well. It's like I need to re-play the training course between levels. That probably wouldn't do me any good since it's taking me about 6 weeks to finish each level. Oh well ... at least I'm still playing.

I gotta say, that last room in your screen shots was on of the funnest battles of the game for me. That's one I played several times over, even after I had defeated it.
It would help to start with more health, though.
One other question...how often do you use quick save, and quick load? Personally, I use them judiciously, even if I don't get killed, to avoid situations where I come into an area with only a tiny amount of health.
For example, if I finish out of a battle with only 3% health left, I might just quickload and do the battle again to see if I can come out of it in better shape.
I guess some might consider that cheating a bit, but it's a lot less frustrating then going into the next area with only a tiny amount of health and dying over and over and over. That makes the game less fun, IMO
Yeah I have to agree with brett. If you come out of a battle with very little health, it's probably a better idea just to reload as much as it pains you to replay a hard battle. It will just make your life easier later.
That said, I feel that it's in general bad game design that you can get stuck with low health like that.
Personally, I've always appreciated the very well-placed auto-saves in Half-Life games. When I was newer at it, I definitely played with Quicksave/Quickload ready to go, but the key is self-control. Challenge is part of the game, so reloading every time something goes even a little wrong can really damage the experience (IMO).
Replaying HL1 with only the autosaves is definitely fun, and when I played HL2 for the first time I only used autosaves as well, and had no issues.

Papaboo: I'm pretty sure HL1 keeps your last *two* autosaves on file. You might consider backing up to one of those, if it'll let you get to that encounter in better shape. You guessed right -- that *is* the final room, and it's a doozy. Good luck!!
This is one of the first great commando fights in the game. You can expect a lot more like it coming up, though this is one of the harder ones. Watch out for grenades.
Keep on rocking
