a little progress ... in On a Rail

After a 3 week layoff I started moving through On a Rail tonight. I think with this post I'll be doing a little less re-telling of the story, which I know most of the readers of this blog already know, and tell a little more about my experience and some continuing issues.

First, my screen shots:

Basically I rode around a little bit and sometimes when I saw directional signs (orange arrows) I would shoot them. I killed some poison spitters, eyed some dead soldiers and was able to add to my weapons and get some help. Things I'm still not doing well is reacting quickly, figuring out what weapon to use for which particular enemy, and reacting quickly. I said that twice on purpose because that's my biggest problem. I ended tonight with Gordon and the cart going up an elevator and getting pwned by a soldier up ahead. I could not shoot quick enough and reload to be able to kill the soldier without getting killed.

I was able at an earlier point to be able to kill one of those stationary laser shooter thingies that used to pwn me by tossing a grenade and backing away.

Now that I'm typing this, maybe alt-fire would be good here. I only ever use it when
I right click on accident. Perhaps even if I don't play that much should blog more. Just by typing out my thoughts, I'm thinking through things better than when I actually am playing.

Perhaps this is the motivation that I'm lacking ... we'll see.

More later.

You gotta use the alt fire...it's like having two weapons in one.

For example, if you have the machine gun selected, use alt-fire to lob some grenades (if you have them) at the soldiers, then clean up with the regular fire machine gun.

The alt-fire on the shotgun is massively powerful. At close range it will kill most enemies with one shot.

Two things, one blog related and one game related.
1. Tell the story! It's good to hear someone who's never played's reactions to the storyline and everything - just reading how about how bad or good you are at the technical stuff is boring! I don't know about the rest of the readers, but your blog is a trip down memory lane for me, and i'm enjoying the nostalgic part, not just 'i'm bad at shooting, how do i get better'
2.The alt-fire for the shotgun is the greatest weapon you will ever come across. In fact, i use the regular fire LESS than the secondary. It will kill pretty much anything instantly (even on hard!) at close range, at least.
3.Keep it up! :)

Like ^they^ said, the shotgun's alt-fire is awe inspiring: firing both barrels at once. Only use it in close quarters, because at long range it's a waste of ammo. In tight hallways and small rooms, switch to the shotgun so that when you round a corner and some sort of boogieman comes at you, you can unload with both barrels. No more boogieman.

The machine gun is good for longer ranges and for cleaning up an area. Use short bursts! Longer bursts from the machine gun make your aim go screwy due to the simulated kickback.

Don't give up dude. The sunlight is coming. As is a good deal more craziness.

Personally, I thought "On a Rail" was one of the hardest parts, because it's really easy to get lost in parts. I suppose the difficult part for you though will be the levels that rely on gunning down the bad guys more than just the exploration. You can do it!

My suggestion would be this: don't discount trying to take 5 minutes to snipe a bad guy from a ridiculous distance so you stay out of harm's way. I did it all the time when I played on Hard mode. No need to face bad guys all close and personal when you don't have to do so! <.<;
