Shocker ... I'm On a Rail

well ... I did a little better than I thought I would and I cleared Power Up! it seems.

I started the night at the top of the same elevator that I was trying to clear after my last post:

After killing some soldiers with my revolver I kept backtracking to see if I could figure out what to do next. When I ended up at the monster again I sought shelter in the control room I was stuck in at two posts ago. After hitting a lever I saw this middle platform rotating. The monster didn't seem amused and rather annoyed. I decided to jump down into the room and run for it and when I did I saw that one opening that was blocked by a cage before was now open so I jetted down that hallway. It led to what seems to be an endless supply of power rooms. When I got to the end I found a ledge with another lever to turn on, and when I did, boom, more electricity with some cool blue rays. With that on I went back towards the big monster and of course he came after me. When I went down the same hallway, something completely unexpected happened ... He was completely destroyed by the "blue rays of shock" and that was that. Although it was a complex way for him to die ... I certainly was surprised that it was somewhat easier to accomplish than the damn three headed monster in Blast Pit. But that was that ... here's a pic post-destroyed monster:

Still not knowing what to do next I went back to the main room I started. There was a train car/people mover type thing that I got on and it worked this time. When it moved forward and stopped I remember that the lever in the first control room made the middle platform move, so I went back and re-engaged that again and off went on the train car ... ON A RAIL!

I got to a security guard with a down gate. After picking up two health packs, I got past the gate and moved forward. After riding the tracks for a good five minutes I suddenly realized I was in another level and maybe that was part of the puzzle. I didn't know at what point I was supposed to get off and explore or was I just supposed to stay on the train and figure that out?

Here are some shots from the train car:

I guess I have a new level to explore and perhaps will get some hints as to what I'm supposed to get out of On a Rail.

Sweet! Congrats.

On a Rail is pretty linear. There are places where stopping the train and exploring is optional (maybe to pick up some health and ammo). And there are spots where you need to get off because the train won't go any further, and you have to transfer to another track, or something like that.

I don't think you'll get lost, but expect some heavy combat.

Oh, btw, do you know about the secondary fire mode on the machine gun? I'm not sure I've ever seen you mention it before...it's a powerful grenade launcher. Very nice to use against the soldiers, though ammo for it isn't always plentiful!

Isn't there a bit where the train just keeps going round in circles unless you get off and change it? Still, I thought this bit came before the monster you just killed, so my memory of it may not be all that great.

Hooray! you're almost to my favourite level - although On A Rail is rather delightful. My advice - spend time here! Don't just get out, there are plenty of little ways to go that are just for ammo and weapons and health and things, and not to actually advance you to the next level. You might get lost, but thats ok - I think everyone's gotten a bit lost in this level.

Atta kid. Way to hustle. ;-)

I don't have much to add. I'm enjoying reading about someone who's not a "gamer" playing through a pretty big game like HL. Keep at it as long as you're having fun!

I'd second what some others have said... Rail is fairly linear, but explore the side passages a bit if you can make the time. You should be able to stock up on health and ammo quite a bit.

Aim for the head!

aim for the head is golden advice, it will take far less bullets to down your enemies.

I did notice you never mentions the submachine gun. If you killed soldiers, you must have picked it up?
also for close range fights, the shotgun ismuch fun, secondary fire fires two shells at once, resulting in major shortrange damage!

you did finish power up quick :) I remember when I played the game, about 10 years ago, I got stuck on this one, couldn't figure out how to kill the beast... you are really improving, another example of how this game really guides and trains your brain into a problem solving way of thinking.

frag on!

Nicely done. Everyone who says that on a rail is linear is pretty much right- but there are a few catches. No, I'm not going to spoil them for you.

On a non-spoiling note, your screenshots on the rail car both show that you are at the slowest forward speed. Be aware that you can move forward faster by hitting move forward multiple times; slow down, stop, or reverse by hitting back. You can leave the car running, but leave the control interface, and stay on the car (sometimes recommended; ducking behind the control panel provides some cover), or even get off of it (not generally recommended; either you have to walk to where the car stopped against a barricade, or try to catch it).

Also, you already figured out that opening crates and boxes can be beneficial. That applies even to smaller boxes, which might be located on shelves.
