Moving forward ... another obstacle down

I picked up a little momentum, but still don't think I have all the tools in place to get out of blast pit. I know some people have asked if I read the blog comments, well I do. I know that there are three things that I need to turn on before I can kill the three headed green monster. Tonight I got what I think is one more.

I finished last night still stuck down in the area with the water and the pipes. Following the advice of a blog reader I found a second staircase that got me up to an area where I thankfully found some more grenades. Unfortunately there was no health.

After killing a few aliens I found a gigantic room with a BIG fan:

After moving my way down I was able to flip a switch and turn on the fan, then move my way back up:

I made my way up without getting chopped up by the fan, made my way back through the tunnels with the pipes and water and all the way back to the room with the green monster. I ended up back in the control room and only the power light was lit up. There were two other lights that weren't lit up.

This leaves me with the following questions:

1) What was the deal with the fan and was that not something I was supposed to turn on?

2) What in the world is the 3rd thing I need to turn on and how do I get to it?

3) Am I going to have the patience to get out of Blast Pit and remotely have a chance to finish this game?

More game time tomorrow ...

You are nearly there. The fan does not count as one of the 3 things you need, but you did need to turn it on. The hint: the fan is so strong its air blast can support gordon's weight...

Hmmm...I thought the fan turned on the air supply for the rocket engine.

Hint: you need 3 things to fire a rocket...fuel, air, and a way to ignite it (power).

Not to discourage you too much, but Half-Life is a long game, and The Blast Pit is only like half way through, I would guess.

But keep up the good work, and you'll get there eventually :) Looking forward to your updates

Poster "gyr" had it right. The hint: the fan is so strong its air blast can support gordon's weight... Try looking *UP* :)

Oh it's also worth mentioning that there is almost ZERO back-tracking required in Half-Life. Any part that does require backtracking should be plenty obvious.

Furthermore, any puzzle solution makes it very clear when it is solved (aka something lights up, bright green). Each of the three things required for Blast Pit has a indicator that turns from red to green. These indicators are at BOTH the main control room with the tentacle monster, as well as at each branch where you turn on the required components.

The thing that's confusing me is that, I thought that after you turned on the fan, there was only one way that you even could go (up).

Maybe I'm misremembering.

I went up after I turned on the fan, but I went "out" back tracking ... I guess I didn't go "up" far enough.

When you first entered Blast Pit, you might have noticed three bridges leading away from the main silo. One, at the top, is the one you took to enter the area. Another, as you've discovered, led to the power generator controls (with the scientist hiding on top of them).

Take a careful look inside the main silo (where the beast is) for another exit. There was a steel-wrapped cable that you followed all the way to the power generator; the fuel and O2 are also fed through pipes to the main control room.
