haven't given up yet ...
I don't know if I've hit a rut or what but I'm only able to take Half-Life in small doses these days. I guess the cumbersomeness (if that's a word) of the levels is more than I care to take on for more than a few minutes at the time. Tonight I tried to get a little farther into Power Up. I re-started not on my quick save but at the previous save before that because my last quick save had me at no ammo and only "4" health.
I can't even remember a lot of details as I wasn't able to get any screen shots to work. Basically, I darted through the room with the mini boss, past some head crabs, aliens, electric shooters ... etc. I found myself in a toxic room and up a couple of ladders. Some soldiers and the stationary laser shooters were owning me as I made my way up. But I did see a soldier getting dragged under a crawl space by something with crab arms. The next level up I couldn't get past one of the stationary shooters before giving up.
I consider it progress because I saved in a different place than where I started. I know it's slow, but it's still moving forward.
Perhaps I'll get my motivation back soon.

If you haven't tried it yet, the best say to take out the sentry guns is to stay behind a corner and lob a grenade near one. That'll knock it over.
Just thought I'd let you know that I've been really enjoying hearing a semi-hardcore game being played through the eyes of a non-gamer. Half Life and Half Life 2 are not easy games by any stretch of the imagination, I struggled with them and I've been playing games for over 6 years now. The fact that you've made it that far without having begun with any skills is quite impressive. Hope you get your motivation back soon so we can read more of your quest.
This is a bit of a late response, but I'm definitely going to give you flak for playing the game with no sound on. Half-Life can be a frustrating game, and the story (carried often through dialogue of the characters) can sometimes seem like the only reason to trudge on! Also, if you really have been going through the game without using the medical stations on the wall, you really ARE earning leet credit as someone else put it!
Anywhos, as someone probably far too fascinated about a non-gamer's take on a hardcore game, I hope you'll be able to press onward, and if not, ramble on about every little thing that makes you want to quit forever. :)
This blog had potential for great things, could have gotten a ton of hits & loyal readers if it was regularly updated.
I'm not trying to be too negative, but it's a shame you have more or less given up :(
