Half-Life is undeniably a watershed - perhaps the watershed - in the brief history of FPS development. So it's the one most of us rabidly appreciative fans want every non-gamer to understand, so they too will know what it is we all get so passionate about. But as an introduction to the experience of actually playing FPSs, I think your blog shows just how bad it is, because so much of what makes Half-Life great depends upon you already being au fait with basics like mouselook and boss maps.
It looks to me that, atm, you don't want to play Half-Life, but rather you want to have played it. Which is turning it into nothing more than a chore.
Seriously. Your friends have taste in FPS games, but I think it's a mistake to recommend Half-Life as the one you should play first.
Go back to Steam. Buy Portal. Then tell us all about it.
At this point, I gotta ask...does he actually read these comments? I've seen lots of clues posted here, but I don't get the impression he's reading any of it.
I am not a gamer. I don’t know the difference between an FPS and an RTS. I don’t know what WASD means. I don’t know what video card I have. But I want to. So here it is in blog form, my non-gamer gaming adventures.

You should have started with Portal.
