estalle el hoyo ... or something like that

I played Half-Life last night and I did my best to stick with WASD for movement and the mouse to look around. For the most part I think I did ok, but I know it's going to take some more work. I had left off right outside a shaft where a helicopter overhead was dropping soldiers and grenades and an onslaught of artillery fire was coming.

I would be lying if I said I got through the shaft without dying. But once I was careful I was able to kill some soldiers, make my way down the shaft and into a crawlspace.

Something as simple as getting into a crawlspace posed a new challenge when trying to use WASD. I wanted to crouch without moving my right hand off the mouse. My default setting has been the cntrl key but I think may move it over to the mouse some way or maybe use the A key and switch the movement keys to ESDF. Who knows? It's a work in progress.

After getting out of the crawl space I encountered a scientist who gave me some information. I was in a control room with much needed health and armor. There was a big red fire door, and elevator, and a silo door. At first I had no idea which way to go, I shot the scientist, and tried to make my way back into the elevator. As I explored a little more I found a big button back in that control room and I pressed it. That opened the way into BLAST PIT.

Finally out of We've Got Hostiles, I was thrilled to be in a new level. I didn't get very far into it because it was getting late. But I did slay a few headcrabs, and got to this big open area where a creature was throwing green goo at me.

This is going to be an interesting world to explore. I didn't cheat and use the arrows at all last night, so I'm actually getting excited about playing more. I guess maybe playing the right way is a good thing.

More to come ...

you can still use the ctrl key for crouch with wasd. use your left pinky finger on 'shift' to run in games, as well as using the left ctrl to crouch.

like Scott said, use your left pinky for the extra stuff like crouch and run. That's why I use ESDF; it opens up Q,A,Z,Shift,Ctrl for extra pinky buttons.

...and of course, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, W, R, T, G, B, V, C, X are available to all your other fingers.

Standard protocol is to use Shift for crouch and Space to jump.

Personally, I use the reverse of that.

I actually always use the X key for crouch, just 'cause it seems to make sense: W is forward, S is back, and X is /down/ -- that is, to say, X crouches.

Of course, according to that control scheme, 2 would logically be "jump," but the space bar works fine for jumpin'. Ctrl is rather awkward to hit, though.

Thank you very much for this post. It has made me appreciate all the hours that I put into learning how to defeat the bots back in Quake and Unreal Tournament, and for the amount of time spent killing demons in DOOM, back when WASD was revolutionary to me and I hadn't heard of anybody else using the "ID controls". I really hope that you push through the learning curve because there is a lot of good material coming up in half life for you to see!

One control layout that works for me is move the keyboard to the left, and use the numeric keypad for movement: WASD becomes 8426 or 8456, jump goes to +, duck goes to enter, and the /*- keys are used for various utility functions (For me in HL, they were 'use' 'reload' and 'flashlight'.

If you want to experiment a bit with it, also try using the 4 and 6 for 'look left/right' and the 1 and 3 for 'strafe left/right'

That still gives you the 7,9,0, and . keys right there under your hand for other uses. The 0 and . are both hard to hit quickly, so you might not care to use them.

I use esdf keys for movement, ever since I got to know it in Tribes2 as the default scheme.
a becomes crouch, space becomes jump.
middle mouse is use, r is reload ... I use this scheme in all the games I play, but, this is a purely personal taste, expiriment, and go with what feels best. Good to see you've made this much progress. Blast pit was one of the most fun levels in half-life imo. enjoy it.

I use WASD for movement, ctrl for crouch, and shift for run (I think that is default). But I switch jump from space bar to mouse button 2 and then take my secondary weapon mode an put it on mouse button 3 (the scroll wheel button). It makes jumping and moving a lot easier because you don't have to stretch your left hand around when jumping.

I was really enjoying reading up on your progress. Please continue writing this if you have time, it is truly fascinating stuff.
