Stuck in a Rut ...
Tonight was my first time for any game play since the end of last week. Last time I played the Test Lab had just blown up, and I found the scientists bloody and the place a mess.
Well ... nothing new to report. I tried to maneuver my way out of the area and didn't get very far. I left the test lab area and kept trying to move my way around, took the elevator back up and was basically just trying to figure out what to do next. As I got off the elevator, I understood that I was actually backtracking from when I first went to the test-lab, but I didn't know where else to go. The only door I could find kept saying "Access Denied" in this deep mechanical voice. The others side of the door looked like another "monitoring room" of some sort.
So basically, I'm barely into game play and already feel like I'm stuck. Maybe somebody obviously wiser than me can give me some pointers as to what to do. I'm trying not too look and sound so obviously ignorant to the world of game play, but how am I supposed to enjoy the game if I can't even do something simple like get myself out of a "stuck" scenario.
Oh well, I feel like I'm not starting out of the right foot.
I'll give it another try tomorrow, but as mentioned, any advice would be appreciated.

don't fret! as i remember the beginning is actually kinda confusing with all the different hallways in black mesa.

You're not alone; I remember being in that situation and becoming quite frustrated until my teenage daughter found the way. Hint: don't forget that you can climb fallen debris and crouch under things. Hope that helps.
hint: There are vents, not only high up, but also by your feet sometimes, keep your eyes open!
I was initially excited by the idea of listening to your first play experience, but it is already getting dull. You don't seem to attempt to observe or think laterally about the world that you've just fallen into, you keep tying it down, distilling it to nothing, refusing to give it breathing room—the door is closed, so you give up—you're doing something akin to the proverbial over-thinking only laced with ennui and a lot more crippling to any potential enjoyment. The place you're stuck in doesn't even require that far-fetched a solution. There is very little far fetching in Half-Life.
Is looking for alternate paths and looking around really as counterintuitive to an untrained gamer as you make it seem? I am all for encouragement and all that, but can't you meet us half way?
Half-Life was the first shooter and the first 3d game I ever played (after years of adventure games and light PC platforming), and while it made me nauseous and was disorienting, hard to control and terrifying, I never felt I was going at this slow a pace.
don't be a dick, hoatzin.
Press on, noble noob! Don't let the naysayers cripple your explorative spirit!
Don't let the "elitist" gamers put you down. Keep it up. Half-life was the first departure from linear "rail" shooters to an experience that required creative solutions to survive in the most hostile environments imaginable. Just like Dr. Freeman you are disoriented and confused by the events at Black Mesa. But keep your head and remember that Dr. Freeman has a Ph.D in theoretical physics and forward progress might not be so simple as finding the door in a room. You will need to crawl, jump and out smart your opponents to survive this catastrophe.
P.S. When the door is locked, vents are your friend.
I'll reiterate what others have said: Look for vents through which you can crawl. Also look for things you can smash open, once you get a tool with which to smash things. Sometimes you will come upon doors with those security locks that say "Access denied", but you may be able to open them by persuading a scientist to follow you. When you come to the door, the scientist may unlock it for you, if he can.
Woha all you guys are making things way too complicated for PapaBoo...
right now where he is stuck there are NO VENTS.
Use the african american scientist...
to open the door,
like they and the security guards did earlier on in the game...
P.S. you will meet this african american scientist once again in Half Life 2... his name is
Eli Vance
