A new way to die ...
I'm trying a thing or two different tonight. I'm going to start adding a few screen-shots so you can see where I start and finish.
This is where I started tonight:

I was able to kill some headcrabs and escape a few by running away. I found a few med-stations and re-filled energy. When I thought I was making progress I had made it to this point:

I fell in the hole, moved around a while, saw this neat valve, I opened it and I subsequently drowned. This happend about five times.
Before drowning:

I stopped here but I think I know my way out of this. I realize that I'm supposed to get through the fence that I saw before I fell in the hole. There's no reason that I should die over and over so the water must be my way out ... so perhaps I'm supposed to get out on the other side of that fence.
We'll see tomorrow. Also, after chatting with pup, I'm adjusting the resolution on my screen to try and make things look better.
More tomorrow ... I'm dedicating two hours for game play on Friday night.

Hey man, just wanted to chime in with some more kudos and encouragement for this little project of yours. It's really fascinating to see your progression through the game, and has really made me realise that things that seem so obvious to me, being a long-time gamer, are actually very obtuse and un-obvious when you think about it, at least to someone without any gaming experience.
Sounds like you're having fun, though, and overcoming the frustrations. You're definitely improving and getting the hang of things. Keep it up, champ. :)
I love your blog. I did kind of the same thing in 2005. Not that I was new to FPSes though, I just had never played half-life.
If I remember correctly, I think the water is the answer. I think you swim around, find a good path that has some secret air pockets at the top of the room, and then continuing on to the next air pocket until you make it to an escape.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Don't give up, the fun is on its way. Swim to the top of that tank, I died there a few times too. Around every corner you'll learn something new and you'll be getting better all the time. Think back to when you did training and look at your skillz now. Good times ahead, trust us.....
